Bowman to speak at Liberty University

The International Society for Christian Apologetics, whose members include Norman Geisler, Gary Habermas, Ravi Zacharias, and many other noted apologists and scholars, will hold its annual conference on June 6-7, 2008, at Liberty University. Rob Bowman will be presenting twice. His first presentation will be on “John 10:30 and the Shema: New Evidence that Jesus Claimed to Be God.” His second presentation is entitled “Gospel Smackdown: Comparing the Canonical and Noncanonical Gospels.” Ergun Caner, Gary Habmermas, Bill Honsberger, Fred Smith, and Don Veinot are just a few of the scheduled speakers. Other topics include Islam, Scientology, Wicca, Hinduism, Buddhism, Oneness Pentecostalism, the problem of evil, the emerging church, and much more. Paul W. Kahn on the deity of Christ

I am currently reading Paul W. Kahn’s recent book Out of Eden: Adam and Eve and the Problem of Evil (Princeton University Press, 2007). Kahn is Robert W. Winner Professor of Law and the Humanities, and Director of the Orville H. Schell, Jr. Center for International Human Rights at Yale Law School. He regards the Bible as myth and appears to be especially influenced by Sigmund Freud and, among more recent thinkers, Elaine Pagels in his reading of the biblical texts.

It is interesting, then, to see how this scholar perceives the early Christians’ view of Jesus Christ. He writes: (more…)

If you’re interested in studying apologetics–whether you’re a beginner or coming with some background and experience–check out Rob Bowman’s online course on apologetics. The course will be part of The Theology Program, part of Reclaiming the Mind Ministries. This may be one of the first courses to use the new Apologetics Study Bible as a required textbook. The course begins February 4, 2008, and runs for nine weeks (with classes held online from 10:00 until 11:30 pm EST).

A recent book co-authored by a Mormon and an evangelical (with some arguably non-evangelical views) claims that Mormons agree with evangelicals “that Jesus was fully God.” I have reviewed this book on Parchment and Pen, the blog of Reclaiming the Mind Ministries.

New article on the Son of God in Mark

The current issue of the Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society (Vol. 50, No. 3, Sept. 2007) includes an article by Herbert W. Bateman IV entitled “Defining the Titles ‘Christ’ and ‘Son of God’ in Mark’s Narrative” (pp. 537-59). Although Bateman affirms the deity of Christ, he argues in this article that the title “Son of God” in Mark does not connote deity or refer to Jesus as divine. Rather, he argues, “Son of God” in Mark is synonymous with “Christ” and identifies Jesus as the Messiah, the “son of David.”

I have completed a first draft of a paper on this topic that offers a counterpoint to Bateman’s argument. In my view, the title “Son of God” in Mark connotes something beyond, and greater than, Jesus’ role as the Davidic Messiah–and does, in fact, connote deity. As soon as the paper is available, I will make that known here.
